The Dive Technique
The Dive is a counter-offensive combination that includes:
- Evasive Movement - “Diving” under the opponent’s wide hook
- Body Position Change - Getting to an advantageous angle
- Multiple Strike Sequence - Delivering a combination of devastating strikes
This technique showcases the effectiveness of blending different martial arts systems (in this case, Silat and Muay Thai) to create practical fighting applications.
When to Use the Dive
The Dive works best:
- Against opponents who throw wide, looping punches
- When you need to quickly close distance
- In situations where you can angle off the centerline
- Against more aggressive opponents
Key Technical Points
When practicing this technique, focus on:
- Timing - Wait for the opponent’s wide hook to commit
- Angle - Move off the centerline to avoid counter attacks
- Level Change - Drop your elevation to get under the punch
- Balance - Maintain stability throughout the sequence
- Follow-through - Complete the entire combination for maximum effectiveness
Training Applications
To develop proficiency with the Dive:
- Practice the movement pattern solo
- Work with a partner throwing controlled hooks
- Use focus mitts to develop timing and precision
- Gradually incorporate into technical sparring
Safety Considerations
Due to the devastating nature of this technique:
- Always practice with appropriate protective gear
- Use control when training with partners
- Focus on technique before power
- Communicate clearly with training partners about intensity
The Muay Thai Dive exemplifies the effectiveness of cross-training in different martial arts systems, taking the best elements from each to create a highly effective fighting technique.
