This instructional video demonstrates effective methods for capturing and countering an opponent’s roundhouse kick. Understanding whether to capture over or under depends on the target zone of the incoming kick, making this a versatile defensive skill set for Muay Thai and MMA.

Capturing Roundhouse Kicks

There are two primary methods of capturing roundhouse kicks:

1. Over Capture

The over capture is used when:

  • The kick is aimed at your torso or higher
  • The trajectory is more horizontal
  • You need to control from above

2. Under Capture

The under capture is used when:

  • The kick is aimed at your legs or lower torso
  • The trajectory is more upward
  • You need to control from below

Key Technical Points

When practicing either capture, focus on:

  1. Timing - Move early enough to catch the kick but not so early that you expose yourself
  2. Body Position - Angle slightly away from the kick to reduce impact
  3. Arm Position - Use proper arm positioning to safely absorb and control the kick
  4. Counter Readiness - Be prepared to counter immediately after capturing

Effective Counters After Capture

Once you’ve captured the kick, you have several counter options:

  • Sweep - Take your opponent’s standing leg
  • Dump - Push them off balance while controlling the caught leg
  • Strike - Deliver punches while controlling their leg
  • Kick - Attack their standing leg
  • Clinch Entry - Step in to establish a dominant clinch position

Training Applications

To develop this skill:

  • Start with a partner throwing slow, telegraphed kicks
  • Gradually increase the speed and power as your timing improves
  • Practice both over and under captures equally
  • Work on transitions between capture and counter
  • Eventually incorporate into light technical sparring

Mastering these kick capture techniques will significantly improve your defensive capabilities and provide you with numerous counter-attacking opportunities in both competition and self-defense scenarios.
