The Scoop and Return Technique
The technique consists of two main components:
- The Scoop - Catching and redirecting your opponent’s teep kick
- The Return - Immediately countering with a round kick to their leg
This counter is particularly effective because it takes advantage of your opponent’s compromised balance after their kick attempt, giving you a perfect opportunity to attack their standing leg.
Key Technical Points
When practicing this counter, focus on:
- Proper Scooping Technique - Use your forearm and hand to safely redirect the kick without absorbing full impact
- Timing - The scoop should be early enough to prevent the kick from landing but not so early that your opponent can adjust
- Balance - Maintain your own balance while your opponent is on one leg
- Counter Speed - The return kick should follow immediately after the scoop
- Target Selection - Aim your counter kick at the thigh of your opponent’s standing leg
Training Applications
This technique can be practiced:
- With a partner throwing controlled teeps
- Using Thai pads with a coach simulating the front kick
- In technical sparring sessions
- As part of defensive drills
Practice Recommendations
For best results:
- Start with slow, telegraphed kicks to develop proper form
- Gradually increase speed as your timing improves
- Practice from both stances (orthodox and southpaw)
- Work this technique until it becomes reflexive
- Incorporate into your defensive strategy against teep-heavy opponents
The Scoop and Return is a fundamental counter in Muay Thai that every fighter should master. With consistent practice, it will become second nature and provide you with an effective answer to one of the most common kicks in the art.
