Lester’s Logic 8 – Shoulder Stop – Kickboxing Drill
This instructional video covers the Shoulder Stop Drill, which is the first technique in my High Performance Kickboxing Series. Not to be confused with Lester’s Logic 1 (which demonstrated the Shoulder Stop Long and Shoulder Stop Short combinations), this drill focuses specifically on the defensive shoulder movement and follow-up counter techniques.

The Shoulder Stop Technique
The shoulder stop is a defensive technique where you use your shoulder to deflect or “stop” an incoming punch while simultaneously creating an opening for your counter attack. This technique is particularly effective against jabs and straight punches.
Key Elements of the Technique
When practicing the shoulder stop, focus on:
- Timing - Meeting the punch at the right moment
- Position - Raising your shoulder while keeping your guard up
- Weight transfer - Shifting slightly to absorb and redirect the force
- Counter readiness - Being in position to immediately respond
Training Benefits
Regular practice of this drill will:
- Improve your defensive reflexes
- Develop your countering speed
- Enhance your sense of timing and distance
- Give you a reliable defense against straight punches
Practice Recommendations
For best results:
- Start with slow, telegraphed punches from a partner
- Gradually increase the speed as your timing improves
- Practice the shoulder stop from both your left and right side
- Combine with different counter techniques (crosses, hooks, uppercuts)
- Eventually incorporate into light sparring sessions
The shoulder stop is a fundamental defensive technique that should be part of every striker’s arsenal. When mastered, it provides a safe way to neutralize attacks while creating effective counter-attacking opportunities.
